Ferrous sulfate is a light blue-green monoclinic crystal with a density of 1.898g/cm3 and melted in crystal water at 64 °C. Soluble in water, the aqueous solution is acidic. It gradually weathers in the air and is oxidized to a yellow-brown alkaline iron salt. At 300 °C, all crystal water is lost, and the anhydrous substance is a white powder.
Ferrous sulfate is used medicinally as a local astringent and blood tonic. It is also used as a nutritional supplement such as iron enhancer and fruit and vegetable coloring agent.
